This week, we started a new project creating a logo for our brand. This is different from previous assignments that focused on learning more tools and skills in Adobe Illustrator, this project is about us thinking about our identities and finding a way to express that just through a picture logo. The first step was to choose five words that describe us and use these words to help give us direction when designing our logo. I chose creative, adaptable, loyal, fun, and thoughtful. Creativity represents my ability to think outside the box and find unique solutions. Adaptability reflects how I adjust to new situations and challenges. Loyalty is important to me because I think it's one of the most important characteristics a person can have especially when your profession is building and relying on connections. Fun relates to my always down-to-have-a-good-time energy while thoughtful reflects how I consider my actions and their impact. After choosing these words, I created a word chart on tracing paper, where I wrote down each word and listed other words or things that related to each word. This exercise helped me explore different directions for my design and think beyond the obvious choices. For example, for creativity, I thought a lot about art and museums and when exploring those thoughts deeper I thought of statues and paintings, but fun might entail more bright and colorful designs. Our next homework due next Tuesday is to gather 25 images that represent our words. Each word should have around five images. We have to use a mix of stock images from websites like Pixabay and Stocksnap.io, the Adobe library, and original photos we have to take ourselves, instead of just looking them all up on Google. This adds difficulty because it requires me to get up and take pictures of real-world examples that connect to my words but I think I’ll learn more by doing this. For instance, for adaptable, I could take a picture of the sun setting from day to night or for loyal, I could photograph my friends hugging or shaking hands. This project is different than other projects because it requires us to think about how we want ourselves represented, not just completing a task or homework assignments. It’s challenging to capture everything I want to say in just one logo, especially when there are multiple aspects of my personality that I want to showcase. Instead of just focusing on skills learned in Adobe, I have to think more creatively like a designer. After I have all my images will help me visualize the different designs I can do, and once I have a clearer idea, I can start planning different logo ideas. This assignment is making me think in new ways, and even though it’s challenging, I know it will be a valuable learning experience. The hardest part of this project is trying to express everything you want in one logo but I'm excited to see what I create.
